“On Wings of Eagles is the amazing story of 1924 Olympic Gold-medalist Eric Liddell, a Scottish man who felt the call of God to be a missionary and teach in China. But it would not be without cost. After the Olympics, Liddell made the journey back to China to teach, despite the raging war and cruelty of the Japanese soldiers.”
“This film is about endurance and, especially, hope, which is the central theme of the film. Liddell undergoes cruelty at the hands of the soldiers and watches others undergo the same treatment. His great victory at the summer Paris Olympics was quite a contrast to what happened to him during World War 2.
Joseph Fiennes gives an excellent performance as Liddell. The story, rich in character development, is based on true events. Eric, also known as the Flying Scotsman, is now commemorated in a monument in China featuring these words from Isaiah: ‘They shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary.'” (Description by The Dove Foundation)

This is our all time favorite family movie! The video taught about sacrifice, all while he struggled with his increasing ill health, only later to be discovered as a brain tumor. His last race in the camp in which he beat the Japanese commander he did with a blazing migraine and shoe-less in the snow. His spirit was amazingly unstoppable. This video speaks to the sacrifice of one man who gave his life for the Chinese people. This film is significant in letting more people know about the love of God…and to see that we can do nothing without faith.” Eric died five months short of the Japanese surrender, systematically ending the war. His body is buried in a plot behind the Japanese officers quarters which now has a large monument with an inscription from the book of Isaiah 40:31 that reads, “They shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary.” Eric gave his entire life to God and showed self-giving love for all who crossed his path. He not only ran so as to win for trophies, but truly he ran to that finish line, “toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).
One of the best movies I have ever seen. Great movie showing more of Eric Liddel’s life as a missionary in China and his early death in 1945. It does a great job showing Eric’s dedication to Christ, and how he stays strong even when facing death. We see him live out his Christian faith, always putting others first and teaching others about Christ. I highly recommend it.
I loved this movie that teaches of sacrifice, service and commitment to God and his work.
This was tremendous showing that goodness has great strength and evil is weak. Even though Eric succombs to death, he triumphs over those who couldn’t kill his soul.
