The Green Prince (2014) is a gripping documentary directed by Nadav Schirman, based on the memoir Son of Hamas by Mosab Hassan Yousef. As the eldest son of a founding Hamas leader, Yousef was arrested as a teenager and imprisoned by Israel’s Shin Bet security agency, where he grew disillusioned after witnessing Hamas’s brutal treatment of suspected informants within the prison. Recruited by Shin Bet and given the code name “the Green Prince,” Yousef spent over a decade secretly working inside his father’s organization, feeding intelligence to his handler, Gonen Ben Yitzhak, at tremendous personal and psychological cost. Told entirely through firsthand interviews with Yousef and Ben Yitzhak, interspersed with archival footage from the Second Intifada, the film traces an extraordinary bond of trust between two men from opposing sides of the conflict—as well as Yousef’s own profound spiritual transformation. The film won the Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Documentary Audience Award and Best Documentary honors from the Israeli Film Academy.
