Royal Navy captain Wentworth was haughtily turned down eight years ago as suitor of pompous baronet Sir Walter Elliot’s daughter Anne, despite true love. Now he visits their former seaside country estate, rented by his brother-in-law, admiral Croft, so the financially stressed baronet can afford a fashionable, cheaper residence in trendy Bath. The former lovers meet again on the estate, but neither dares to admit their feelings until it seems too late. Both separate, but meet again in Bath. Over time, the truth becomes clear.

Tonight we watched the 2007 adaptation of Persuasion. We had never seen this movie before. We appreciated how Anne waited to accept Captain Wentworth’s proposal until a ri.e he was more capable of providing for his family and fulfilling his role as a potential husband. We also respected how Anne’s friend warned her of her cousin, Mr. Elliott’s true intentions. That’s what friends do. To her friend’s credit, Anne received this information she needed in order to gain clarity and confirmation of her heart. Had her friend kept thst information to herself, Anne may have felt confused in choosing one proposal over the chance of another.

This version of Persuasion is well done. As always, Jane Austen writes a brilliant love story packed-full of lessons and principles for all ages to glean from. First we see the life-altering consequences that come from those who are too easily persuaded, we see the difference between two gentlemen both with money yet one lacks in character. As my 4-year-old son said, “You shouldn’t marry a man just for the money that they have, it’s more important to be a good man”. We read in the scriptures that the Lord does not delight in those who are easily persuaded by others– in watching this movie I can see why that is. Confidence and determination in standing for something you know is right, is an essential attribute in a man who will one day lead a family, a woman who will raise up her children in righteousness, and of course as a follower of Jesus Christ. Anne Elliot’s soberness is admirable in this film, as well. Showing the comparison in Anne versus her sisters and sisters-in-law. One of our favorite things about Jane Austen’s stories is that she is always sure to include a poor example of character and a good example, which makes for awesome teaching moments with our children.
