Even after an accident causes him to lose his leg, John Rowe Moyle continued his sojourn to the temple site each week until his death. (Description by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
John Rowe Moyle was a convert to the Church who left his home in England and traveled to the Salt Lake Valley as part of a handcart company. After a cow kicked him and caused a compound fracture, his leg was amputated near the knee. Despite the crude surgery, he carved a wooden prosthetic with an ingenious ankle joint. Once he could bear the pain, he routinely walked the 22 miles from his home in Alpine, Utah, to the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City. There, at 77 years old, he climbed 100 ft of scaffolding and diligently used a chisel to carve the iconic “Holiness to the Lord” inscription that still stands on the temple’s east side today.

One Response
John is an amazing man. The dedication he had to the Lord and His work is a great example to us all. I will never look at the carving on the east side of the Salt Lake Temple the same after watching this movie.
