Newton’s Grace is the true story of a real “Prodigal Son,” the story of miraculous forgiveness and change that lies behind the powerful words of one of the world’s most beloved hymns. Following a powerful conversion experience during a storm at sea, Newton would eventually become a pastor in the Church of England and write several of the church’s most beloved hymns, including “Amazing Grace.” (Description by IMDB)

I enjoyed learning more about Newtons life and his conversion to following God. His experience as a slave and then being the captain of a slave ship were moving. So wonderful that he came to understand the blessings trials can bring.
What a movie, what a life. I don’t know if I could have gone through all that he did. This is based on the true story of John Newton who gets captured and brought to a boat to work, he then gets sold into slavery himself. He has a lot of hard things happen to him, he is in a huge storm at sea and prays to God to be delivered from it. He is beaten, he is shackled. But through all of his challenges he learns to turn to God during them and he gets delivered. He later becomes a pastor. He writes the words to the hymn Amazing Grace based on these experiences in his life.

I was impressed that he used his time as a slave to better himself mentally and physically. He seemed to have a lot to complain about but he just put himself fully into the work. You can see that his time as a slave did not change his heart as it was too hard and bitter to see sympathy for others that were experiencing the same evil he had, he became a slave ship captain upon his freedom. I did like that it showed that he recognized that the good he thought he was doing was not good enough and he needed to sacrifice more. When he did, he got the peace he was looking for his whole and wrote the song, Amazing Grace.
