Summary

Asael Smith, grandfather of the Prophet Joseph Smith and husband to Mary Duty. During the Revolution he followed the example of his illustrious father and served with the Colonial forces. He also had the gift of prophecy and at one time said: “It has been borne in upon my soul that one of my descendants will promulgate a work to revolutionize the world of religious faith.” He lived to accept the Book of Mormon but was not baptized due to his weakened physical condition. He was born in Topsfield, Massachusetts, March 7, 1744 and died at the age of 86.
