Summary
Baron Edward George Bulwer-Lytton’s greatest contribution lay in his novels, plays, and essays. Evidence of his versatile talent and indefatigable industry appear in almost every department of literature. But his novels, his historical romance novels affected society the most. The expression, romantic, in Websters 1828 dictionary meant “to rise over, to soar, to reach to a distance, to divine, to romance.” So it was with Lytton’s novels. Last Days of Pompeii was his most popular novel.
